Joel Lane’s Ancestry

Sir Ralph Lane:  Orlinbury, England, married a first cousin of Katherine Parr, the sixth Queen of Henry VIII.  His son, also named Sir Ralph Lane, and Sir Richard Grenville sailed from Plymouth, England in 1585.  They founded the colony on Roanoke Island, and Sir Ralph Lane became the first English Governor in America.  The colony was not successful and they returned to England.  Sir Ralph Lane died in Ireland in 1604.  The connection between Sir Ralph Lane and Joel Lane’s family is not clear, and it is no longer believed that a link between the two exists.

Shortly after Jamestown was founded in 1607, many Lane family members settled in Virginia.  Their descendants were among the original North Carolina settlers.

Richard Lane Family.  Jamestown, Virginia.  The first Lane family to settle and remain in America.

Joseph Lane.  Born in Jamestown in 1631, he moved to North Carolina sometime after 1665, and settled in Bertie County.

Joseph Lane.  Born in or near Jamestown in 1665.  He served as a Colonel in the Militia and as High Sheriff of Edgecombe County where he died sometime between 1752 and 1758.

Joseph Lane.  (1710- 1776) Lived in Halifax County (formed out of Edgecombe County).  Married Patience McKennie in 1730 and had five sons:

1. John Lane (b. c. 1730) m. 1750 Mary Polly Shephard (b. c. 1733), moved to South Carolina, and it is believed that he died in Georgia. They had 7 children: Ann, Mary, Patience, Abraham Shephard, John, Alexander, and Benjamin.

2. Joseph (b. 4/15/1731, d. 1798) married 1750 Sarah Bradford and died in Wake County. His house built in 1773 is still standing and is privately owned. They had four children: Rebecca, Tabitha, Rhoda, and Joseph.

3. Jesse (b. July 3, 1733, d. Oct 28, 1806) married 12/16/1755 Winifred Aycock (b. 4/11/1741 d. 12/16/1794), and died in St. Louis, Missouri.  Jesse had 16 children. His grandson Joseph Lane was a hero during the Mexican War and was later appointed first territorial governor of Oregon.  He was elected as Oregon’s first senator.  Lane County, Oregon is named after him.  David Swain, governor of NC and president of UNC during the 19th century, is also a grandson of Jesse.

4. Barnabas (b. 1735) m. Sara Martin, died around 1775 in Giles Co, TN.  They had three children: Martin, Barnabas, Jr., and a daughter, Jean.  There is some evidence that Joel Lane adopted Jean.  After Joel and his wife Mary died in 1795, their son Thomas lived with his cousin Martin Lane.

5. Joel (b. 1740 d. 3/29/1795) married Martha Hinton (1745-1771) in 1762.  Together they had 3 sons. In 1772, married her sister, Mary (1755-1795).  Together they had 9 children. For more information on their children, click the tab above entitled “Descendants.”

What visitors say

Thank you for touring us around the Joel Lane House. Our architecture and the way we live has come a long way throughout the years. You really gave us great information on what life was like back when Joel Lane was alive. They lived in very harsh conditions with no heat or air condition which would be very tough today. I appreciate all your help and time put in to tour us around the house.
