The Simple Joys of a A Colonial Christmas
In 2008 a Colonial Christmas at Joel Lane’s home continued a 30-year tradition. From 1 to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday of the first weekend in December, we offered activities authentic to North Carolina in the colonial through early 19-century period.
Both young and older were fascinated by reproductions of artifacts that were crucial to colonial life. Visitors touched and explored them to test their knowledge and powers of deductive reasoning.
Re-enactors on the grounds took visitors back in time. Other interpreters entertained children using colonial and early 19th-century games and crafts. Decorations inside Joel Lane’s manor house were true to the period. Music was provided by Triangle Mountain Dulcimers on Saturday and by a pianist on Sunday. Information about the house and grounds was offered by costumed docents. The gift shop was open with many wonderful gifts and stocking stuffers priced under $10, and the annual bake sale featured delicious local specialties and traditional delights. Donations were requested.
