Back by popular demand, Jim Jones will lecture on “Comitia Americana Medals.”
On April 23, 2009 at 7 pm in the Visitors Center, Mr. Jones will discuss the stories of eleven of America’s most-admired statesmen and will show images of the very exclusive medals awarded by Congress to them. Admission will be $15 for the general public and $10 for members of the Joel Lane Historical Society. To join, click here. Refreshments will be served. Seating is extremely limited, and reservations are required. Please join us in the intimate setting of our historic Visitors Center, circa 1820-40, for a glass of wine and a fascinating talk.
This lecture provides an overview of eleven unique medals that were authorized during the American Revolution by the Continental Congress to recognize the leadership and valor of key officers in important battles. These medals were designed, engraved, and struck in France under the direction of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Historical maps, contemporary portraits and paintings, and high quality digital images of the medals themselves reveal the significance of individual contributions and the grateful appreciation of the new-born independent nation. Several intimately related medals will also be discussed.
After 35 years of service, Mr. Jones retired from IBM in 2004 to focus on his interests in American colonial history, North Carolina genealogy, and numismatism and to spend more time with his family. He researches and lectures on selected historic, genealogical and numismatic topics of personal interest. He has lectured numerous times on Colonial Currency here at the JLMH and has always been warmly received for his fascinating explanations and detailed images.
