Concert of Early American Music by Nationally Renowned Musicians
Joel Lane Museum House hosted a CONCERT: “Music of Early America”
Those who attended enjoyed American music of the colonial, Revolutionary, and Federal periods by renowned specialists David & Ginger Hildebrand on Friday, March 13, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary of Raleigh Moravian Church at 1816 Ridge Road, Raleigh. Tickets were $25 in advance for the general public, $30 at the door, and $20 for students and members of the Joel Lane Historical Society. Group rates were also available. Tickets were sold through the Joel Lane Museum House at 919-833-3431 or email . We accepted MasterCard and Visa over the phone.
The Hildebrands recreated the patriotic songs, ballads, marches, dance tunes, and theater songs known by Franklin, Washington, and other American patriots! Authentic and reproduction instruments, including the violin, Baroque guitar, English guitar, hammered dulcimer, spinet (harpsichord), and English flute were featured at this event. Costumed appropriately, the Hildebrands brought their musical and historical expertise to what was both an entertaining and educational concert. The program highlighted both the formal and less refined aspects of music associated with early America. Spoken introductions and stories put the music and instruments into context, while highlighting connections to North Carolina in particular.
David and Ginger specialize in researching, recording, and performing early American music. Since 1980 they have presented concerts and educational programs throughout the country for museums, historical societies, public schools, and universities. Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Archives, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Styriarte Festival (in Graz, Austria) are among their past sponsors.
The Hildebrands provided soundtrack materials and served as period music consultants for several PBS broadcasts: the series Liberty!--the American Revolution, and the one-hour specials Jefferson: A View from the Mountain and Rediscovering George Washington. David and Ginger have issued six full-length recordings, most notably George Washington: Music for the First President (1998) and Music in the Life of Benjamin Franklin (2006). In 1999, together with dance historians Kate van Winkle and Robert Keller, the Hildebrands founded The Colonial Music Institute (http://www.colonialmusic.org).
Ginger holds an M.M. from the Peabody Conservatory; David’s M.A. is from George Washington University and his Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America. David consults and lectures widely, and they both write and teach in the classroom and privately.
