Lecture on the Women of Joel Lane’s Family

when: Jan. 21, 2010

Gwen Mays, descendant of Joel Lane’s brother, Jesse, will speak about women of Joel Lane’s family at 7 pm on Thursday, January 21, 2010 in the Visitors Center. Admission will be $15 for the public and $10 for members of the Joel Lane Historical Society. Refreshments will be served. Seating is limited, and reservations are required. Please call 919-833-3431 with your MasterCard or Visa, or mail a check to P O Box 10884, Raleigh NC 27605.  Be sure to include the names of all in your party; nametags will serve as tickets.

Gwen is the Organizational Records Archivist at the State Archives and has a personal interest in the colonial period, women’s history, and of course the Lane family. She has a Master’s Degree in Archival Management from NCSU and has worked at the North Carolina State Archives since 1994.  Her minor was in Southeastern Colonial History, with an emphasis on women’s history.  She has been doing family history research for almost 30 years, and as a Lane descendant has a special interest in the people and the history of North Carolina in general and Wake County in particular.  She lives in Raleigh and is married with two grown daughters.

Thank you so much for leading us on a guided tour of the Joel Lane House! I had no idea that the kitchen was separate from the main house, and how different the two are. I had always assumed that the most dangerous job for a slave was in the fields, but your expertise showed me that the kitchen (because of the heat and potential for fire) was actually the most dangerous for a slave woman…
