Museum Store Holiday Open House and Book Signing

when: Dec. 10, 2013

The Joel Lane Museum House invites you to attend a Museum Shop Open House on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Enjoy hot wassail while you peruse the shop’s many gift ideas. Admission is free.

At 5 pm, author Nancy Rascoe of Hertford, NC will briefly speak about and sign her book “The Sandy Banks Live On.” Ms. Rascoe wants to make sure that the history of Old Nags Head and other towns on the North Carolina Outer Banks lives on. These stories have been passed down from one generation to the next and tell about those who came to the Outer Banks to farm, to fish and even to help save those in distress. These pioneers shaped the island that is enjoyed by locals and thousands of visitors each year.

“Miss Nancy” hopes that the stories in her book of days gone by on the Outer Banks will be told “as if they had never, ever, been told before!” She spent 30 years writing this book about Old Nags Head and other villages on the Outer Banks thanks to her wish to pass down the stories and history of the area. The stories in her book have been passed down from family members…one generation to the next.

“The Sandy Banks Live On” starts with the early years at Rascoe Cottage in Nags Head and flashes back to descendants of the early settlers on the Outer Banks. Summer residents, long time locals, and natives tell their stories, share their customs and their memories. This is a must read book for anyone who loves the Outer Banks. The photos are wonderful and will take you back to a simpler time on the beach.

What visitors say

Thank you for the excellent tour of the Joel Lane House.  I learned a lot about the history of Raleigh as well as the Joel Lane House.  I learned how harsh conditions were back then and how we take for granted things they did not have back then.  The structure of houses has really changed a lot since the Joel Lane House was built.
