POSTPONED TO April 2: A lecture on “Evolution of Firearms from Late 1700s to Civil War” by Mike Helms will take place on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at 7 pm at the Visitors Center of the Joel Lane Museum House at 160 South Saint Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. Admission will be $16 for the general public and $11 for members of the Joel Lane Historical Society. Refreshments will be served. Seating is limited, and advanced payment is required. Tickets are non-refundable unless we must cancel the event.

The pace of firearms development accelerated rapidly in the first half of the 19th century. Firearms historian Michael Helms will be displaying a selection of period firearms and discussing their unique stories and their social and technological importance.19th century firearms is the topic of Michael Helms’ forthcoming history thesis at North Carolina State University.

A historian by temperament and a passionate explorer and researcher, Mike Helms spends many of his Saturdays crisscrossing the state’s side-roads in search of North Carolina’s material culture and the rich, untold stories it tells. He spoke at the JLMH in May 2013 to rave reviews. An accomplished public speaker, published writer and photographer, Mike makes his talks come alive with the heart and humor of a natural raconteur. A geologist by education and software architect by day, Mike Helms lives in North Raleigh with his ravishing wife and canine weekend traveling companion.
