Lecture on “Promoting Heritage Tourism Through the Preservation of City-Owned Cemeteries”
Jane Thurman, President of Raleigh City Cemeteries Preservation, spoke on “Promoting Heritage Tourism Through the Preservation of City-Owned Cemeteries” at 7 pm in the Visitors Center on November 13, 2008. Admission was $15 for the general public and $10 for members of the Joel Lane Historical Society. To join, click here. Refreshments were served. The talk focused on the goals of RCCP, which include restoration, GIS mapping, and database collection for city cemeteries as well as publication of the findings and the promotion of heritage tourism.
Ms. Thurman’s background includes serving 6 years on the Raleigh Historic District Commission and a long-term interest in architecture, design, and historic preservation. She is a former journalist who worked at Associated Press and freelanced writing for many publications including the New & Observer. RCCP was started in 2006 and is 501(c)3 organization founded to help the City of Raleigh raise funds for the restoration and conservation of three city-owned cemeteries: City Cemetery, Mt. Hope Cemetery, and O’Rorke Cemetery.
