Six Windsor Chairs
2015.2.1
18th -century Bowback 9-spindle Windsor chair with bamboo stretchers and legs. Approximately 37 ¼” tall at tallest point; saddle seat is 15 ¾” wide, approx. 14 ¾” from front to back, and 1 ¼” deep. Two beads (grooves) on crest rail. Groove at back of seat is quite deep. Holes on bottom of seat where upper rails terminate have been filled. No paint traces on seat bottom. Gouges in right front and rear of seat have been repaired. Bottom of feet ended out (replaced). 4th spindle from the right is loose where it joins the crest rail. Scratches on seat.

18th -century Bowback 7-spindle Windsor chair with bamboo stretchers and legs. 34 ¼” tall, seat 14 ½” wide, 14 ¾” from front to back. 3 spindles have shrunk and do not fill the holes in the top of the crest rail. Seat has cracks in front and a repair on the right side. Groove at rear is shallow. Seat bottom has white, black, and yellow paint, marks reading “Esgimtt PHMT “ in black marker, “Whitney” in pencil, and “41” in chalk, and a gouge. No ornamentation on crest rail.

18th -century Bowback 8-spindle Windsor chair with bamboo stretchers and legs. 37 ¾” tall, seat is 17” wide, 16” from front to back, and 1 ¼” deep. Back is 19 ¼” at widest point. Seat has cracked and been repaired with metal braces on the bottom. Traces of green paint over all. Deep bead on rear of seat. 4 beads in crest rail. Label reads: “8 spindle bamboo Windsor ‘I. C. Tuttle’ Salem, MA 1795-1802.” Bottom of seat marked “I. C. Tuttle.”

19th-century 6-spindle Windsor chair with bamboo legs and plain stretchers. 33 ¾” tall, seat 15 5/8” wide, 16” from front to back, 2 1/8” deep. 2 scratches on seat. Bottom of seat traces of green, white, and yellow paint and hand hewn marks. Notches on either end of crest rail.

One of a pair of 7-spindle bowback Windsor chairs with bamboo legs and stretchers. 38 ¼” tall, 17 ¼” wide at spindles, seat 15 ½” wide, 14 7/8” from front to back, and 1 ½” deep. Single bead on crest rail. Excellent condition for age. Label on bottom of seat reads: “Pair New England bowback Windsors C. 1785, prob. Conn”.

One of a pair of 7-spindle bowback Windsor chairs with bamboo legs and stretchers. 38 ¼” tall, 17 ¼” wide at spindles, seat 15 ½” wide, 14 7/8” from front to back, and 1 ½” deep. Single bead on crest rail. Excellent condition for age. Heads of legs on seat are more prominent on this one. Bottom of seat shows some damage from wood borers.
